Nike Desis
Nike Desis is an artist, writer, and curator who prefers to work in groups and as a group. Presently based in New London, CT, Nike previously earned a Bachelor of Arts from from the liberal arts institution Kenyon College, in Gambier, OH. Following, she lived and worked in New Orleans and Philadelphia.
At the New Orleans Community Printshop, as a Working Member, Nike taught children and adults how to screen print, lead a book & print club, designed and printed promotional material, and participated in financial organization and capacity building workshops.
In Philadelphia, Nike was one of the co-operators who founded and ran the non-profit FLUXspace. There, the aim was to work collaboratively to experiment with curating, supporting artists to make new work, and otherwise create programming to "explore relevant cultural phenomena that is under examined, unfamiliar or of uncertain importance.”
Currently, Nike is employed at a public library in Connecticut where she is responsible for the Young Adult department. Her focus is on maintaining access to information and public space, engaging youths in various programming and volunteering, and sustaining a relevant print & media collection. She is also what we call a “working member” at the organization Spark Makerspace, a multifaceted community of creative and human resources. In addition to serving on the Member Council, her involvement there is as a “lead” of the screen printing station. A lead is responsible for supporting use of the station such as maintaining the station’s functionality, communicating best practices, and developing classes and programming. Additionally, Nike lives in a small room in a big house an unintentionally quasi collective living situation with many other residents and visitors.
